DAB+ Digital radios

DAB+ digital radios are designed to receive digital radio broadcasts and, depending on their construction, may be suitable for both home use and carrying around. When choosing one, do not rely on appearance alone; check the power supply, dimensions, controls and antenna details of the specific model. Broadcast availability depends on coverage at the place of use and on reception conditions. Individual receivers can differ significantly in their features, so compare only the functions listed in their specifications.

DAB+ digital radios

A DAB+ radio processes digital radio broadcasts in a supported band. Before buying, check whether DAB+ broadcasting is available in the places where you want to use the receiver. Coverage may not be the same in every town, building or room and can vary according to the receiver's position or surrounding obstacles.

Always assess the antenna based on the specific product. A model may have a telescopic, fixed or other manufacturer-specified antenna, so do not infer its type or adjustment options from a photograph. If you want to use the radio in several places, also consider whether the antenna can be conveniently extended, positioned and stowed again.

Some devices may support another reception method in addition to DAB+, but this is not an automatic feature of the entire category. Ask yourself these checking questions: do you need only DAB+, or do you also want another reception option? Is the required mode explicitly listed in the technical details of the selected model? Will you use the radio in an area where that type of broadcasting is available?

How to choose a suitable model

First, decide where the radio will stand and how often you will carry it. For a permanent location, the layout of the controls and access to power may be important, while weight, dimensions and power supply type matter when carrying it. Compare the specific values in the product specifications, as they cannot be generally inferred from the DAB+ designation.

Selection area Checking question What to check for the model
Digital reception Is the radio designed to receive DAB+? The supported reception designation in the technical details.
Other reception Do you need another mode in addition to DAB+? Whether the required mode is explicitly listed for the product.
Coverage Will you use the radio in one place or several places? The availability of the relevant broadcast in every planned location.
Antenna Can you position it appropriately in the given location? The type, design and adjustment method of the specific model's antenna.
Power supply Will the radio mainly stay in one place, or do you want to carry it? The supported power supply method and accessories listed for the product.
Dimensions and weight Will it fit in the selected location or in your luggage? The exact dimensions and weight in the specification.
Controls Are you comfortable with the button layout and information display? A description of the controls and display without assuming unlisted functions.
Connections and functions Which options will you actually use? Only connections and functions confirmed by the manufacturer or seller.

Portability, power supply and placement

Choose a portable DAB+ radio according to how you will actually use it. A small design alone does not confirm battery operation or the presence of a built-in rechargeable battery. Therefore, check which power source the specific model can use, what is included in the package and whether that solution suits you when moving between rooms or using the radio out of reach of a power socket.

When positioning the radio, leave enough space to operate it and adjust the antenna. If the receiver will stand on a shelf, table or by a window, compare the available space with the dimensions listed for the product. When carrying it, also consider protecting the controls and antenna; adapt how you handle it to the design of the particular radio.

Reception conditions may change after moving the radio, so do not regard the result in one place as a guarantee of identical operation elsewhere. Before choosing, check coverage at the planned location and follow the manufacturer's instructions during use. If the technical details do not clearly state the antenna type or power supply method, do not infer them solely from the name or image.
