Stands and holders for smartphones and tablets

A stand or holder keeps your smartphone or tablet in view while practising, rehearsing, recording and performing. The device can display sheet music, lyrics, a timer, a backing track or music app controls, but it must remain stable and easy to reach without getting in the way of your playing. Choose first according to the mounting location, then according to the device size and the positioning adjustments you need. A universal label does not guarantee that the holder will fit every case or stand.

Smartphone and tablet stands and holders by mounting method

A desktop solution is suitable wherever you have a solid work surface in front of you: for practising at home, recording or taking an online lesson. It can sit on a base or attach to the edge of a desk. For a clamp-on model, check the shape and thickness of the desktop; for a freestanding model, check the base area and how much space it occupies next to other equipment.

A holder for a microphone stand, music stand or another compatible stand saves floor space. It is practical for musicians who already use a stand and want the display close to their field of view. Before buying, check the mounting method and clamping range rather than assuming compatibility from a photo alone. An excessively long arm or a heavy device can affect the balance of the entire setup.

A floor stand works independently and may be suitable on stage, in a rehearsal room or beside an instrument where no table is available. However, it needs its own space and safely routed cables. The legs must not interfere with pedals, walkways or the area in which you move with your instrument.

Desktop, floor and universal types

TypeTypical useWhat to look out for
Desktop stand or clampHome practice, desk use, recording and video calls.Desk space, edge thickness, stability and arm reach.
Holder for an existing standSheet music, an app or a backing track during rehearsals and on stage.Clamp compatibility, stand balance and position relative to the microphone or instrument.
Floor standIndependent placement for singing, guitar, keyboards or drums.Base footprint, height, safe cable routing and room to move.
Universal holderSwitching between several devices or uses.Actual jaw range, case thickness and access to ports.

Clamping range, angle and height

The most important factor is whether the holder matches the dimensions of your smartphone or tablet. Measure the device with its case if you do not want to remove it every time. Check where the holder grips the edges and whether it blocks the buttons, camera or charging port. If you alternate between a phone and a tablet, make sure the clamping range genuinely accommodates both devices.

Angle adjustment helps reduce glare and lets you position the display so that you do not have to change your playing posture to read it. Height adjustment is important for floor stands, while the arm range of a desktop clamp is also useful. The joints should hold the selected position without gradually dropping; assess their load capacity and locking mechanism using the specifications of the particular product.

Sheet music and lyrics

When reading a longer score, you need the display in your natural field of view. Position the tablet so that it does not block your view of the conductor, another musician or the instrument controls. If you turn pages by touch during a piece, the stand should not move when tapped normally. Also try portrait and landscape orientation to suit the app you use.

Apps, rehearsals and the stage

When controlling an app, arm's reach and unobstructed access to the screen are what matter. During rehearsals or on stage, also consider vibrations, stands that are already in use and the route of the power cable. Adjust the holder before you begin playing; changing it in the middle of a piece is an unnecessary distraction and may cause other equipment to move.

What to check before choosing

  • Measure your phone or tablet with its case and compare it with the clamping range.
  • Decide whether the holder should sit on a desk, attach to an edge or stand, or stand on the floor.
  • Check access to the buttons, camera, charging port and the headphone jack or any other port you use.
  • Check the rotation and height ranges for your seated or standing position.
  • For stage use, take the musicians' movement, pedals and cable routes into account.
  • When attaching it to an existing stand, consider the balance of the whole setup, not just the holder itself.

The right model does not have to be the one with the longest arm or the most joints. It should hold your device in the position you need, fit into your workspace and avoid making the instrument harder to reach. Once you know the device dimensions and mounting location, choosing between a desktop, floor and universal solution becomes much easier.
