Hi-Fi Tonearm cables

Hi-Fi tonearm cables are used to connect a turntable or tonearm to a phono preamplifier or an amplifier with a PHONO input. When choosing one, it is not enough to consider only the appearance of the connectors, as their type, wiring, orientation and grounding method all matter. Suitable length, safe routing and mechanical protection of the cable are also important. Before ordering, therefore, check both devices you intend to connect and the information provided for the specific product.

Hi-Fi tonearm cables by connector and wiring

First, find out whether the turntable has a detachable cable or a permanently attached lead. A detachable connection may use a pair of RCA connectors, a multi-pin connector at the base of the tonearm or another solution chosen by the manufacturer. The preamplifier often has separate left and right inputs, but their presence alone does not confirm that the entire cable is suitable.

For a multi-pin connector, compare the number and arrangement of the contacts, the connector gender and the direction of the cable outlet. The space behind the turntable may require a straight or right-angle connector. If the system uses separate grounding, check whether the cable has a ground wire and whether it can be connected to the terminals on both devices.

ConnectionWhat to check on the turntable sideWhat to check on the other side
RCA – RCALeft and right outputs, channel markings and any ground terminalA suitable phono input, channel identification and grounding capability
Multi-pin connector – RCAShape, number of contacts, orientation and space for a straight or right-angle connectorA pair of RCA inputs and any ground terminal
Permanently attached cableWhether the device allows replacement at all without service interventionThe type of available input and grounding method

Length, routing and mechanical protection

Choose a length that reaches between the devices without being pulled tight, but does not leave an unnecessarily large loop. Do not route the cable across the lid hinge, under a sharp edge or through a place where furniture could pinch it. When connecting it, hold the connector by its body and do not pull on the cable itself. Also leave a little slack near the connectors so that movement of the device does not transfer force to the socket or tonearm base.

Keep the signal cable separate from power adapters, mains cables and motor-driven devices whenever the layout allows. If cables have to cross, arrange them without bundling them tightly together. Secure the cable loosely and do not use a fastening that could deform its jacket. Before moving the system, disconnect the cable first so that the connectors do not bear the weight of the device.

Electrical specifications and cartridge compatibility

A turntable cartridge operates in a sensitive signal chain, so follow the documentation for the cartridge, turntable and phono preamplifier. If the manufacturer of a particular cable specifies its capacitance, conductor wiring or shielding method, compare this information with the system requirements. If the specifications are missing, do not estimate them from the thickness, price, connector material or trade name.

A cable does not replace a phono preamplifier. Do not automatically connect a turntable output intended for PHONO to a standard line input; first check whether the turntable includes a switchable or permanently active preamplifier. If the labelling is unclear, consult the device manual. You can find other types of interconnects in the Hi-Fi cables category.

Checklist before choosing

  1. Check whether the turntable cable is detachable.
  2. Note the type, gender and orientation of the connector on the turntable side.
  3. Check the input type on the phono preamplifier or amplifier.
  4. Compare the left and right channel markings at both ends.
  5. Find out whether the system requires a separate ground wire and what terminals it has.
  6. Measure the cable route, including clearance around the connectors.
  7. Check whether a straight or right-angle connector will fit next to the device.
  8. Plan the route away from sharp edges, the moving lid and places where the cable could be compressed.
  9. Compare only documented electrical specifications with the cartridge and preamplifier manuals.
  10. Before switching on, check that the connectors are firmly inserted without force and that the grounding is correct.

Connection and subsequent checks

Switch off the devices and mute the system before connecting them. Insert connectors straight, without twisting or excessive force; align a multi-pin connector according to its guide or marking. After connection, check the channels at low volume. If you notice hum, signal loss or crackling when touching the cable, switch off the system and check the connectors, ground wire, cable routing and wiring compatibility instead of increasing the volume further.
