Headphone Cases

A headphone case helps keep your headphones, cable, and small accessories together during transport and storage. When choosing one, consider the type and dimensions of your headphones and how they fold, rather than just the appearance of the case. Hard and soft options differ in their construction, volume, and how they fit into luggage. A suitable case should provide enough space without putting unnecessary pressure on the earcups, headband, or connectors.

Headphone cases by type of use

First decide whether you want to carry in-ear headphones, a foldable model, or non-foldable over-ear headphones. It also matters whether the case will be stored separately, in a bag among soft items, or in luggage with other objects.

Hard cases

A hard case retains its shape and separates the headphones from the rest of your luggage, but it takes up the same amount of space even when empty. Check its internal shape, depth, rounded corners, and zipper position in particular. The external dimensions may not correspond to the usable space.

Soft cases and pouches

A soft case is flexible, fits easily among other items, and can generally be folded after the headphones are removed. It is useful for separating your headphones from cables, small items, and dirt. Because it adapts to the surrounding contents, pay attention to the objects placed next to it when packing.

Comparison of hard and soft cases

Feature Hard case Soft case
Shape Retains its own shape Adapts to the contents
Space in luggage Requires space based on its external dimensions Fits more easily among soft items
Empty case Remains bulky Can usually be folded or compressed
Accessories Often has a pocket or separate section More often provides a single shared compartment
What to check Internal dimensions, depth, and shape Volume and closure method
Typical use Carrying with other objects Lightweight transport and storage

These are general differences. Always compare the specific material, layout, and usable space with your headphones and accessories.

Dimensions and internal layout

Measure the headphones in the position in which you will store them. For a foldable model, use its folded shape; for a non-foldable model, account for the full width of the headband and the thickness of the earcups. The internal dimensions should leave enough space for easy insertion and removal, but not excessive room.

Distinguish between external and internal dimensions. Walls, padding, seams, pockets, and rounded corners reduce the usable space. If only a list of compatible models is provided, check the exact version of your headphones, as a similar name does not necessarily mean the same shape.

Space for cables and accessories

A separate pocket, elastic strap, or compartment helps keep the cable away from the earcups. Also account for a charging cable, adapter, USB receiver, or charging case. Connectors should not rest against the ear cushions, and the cable should be stored loosely without sharp bends near its ends. If the compartment is small, do not force accessories into it.

What to check before choosing

  • Measure the headphones in their actual storage position.
  • Check whether the manufacturer provides internal or external dimensions.
  • Check the width, height, depth, and shape of the corners.
  • Make sure the closed case does not press against the earcups or headband.
  • Allow space for cables, adapters, and other accessories.
  • Check the position of pockets, seams, the zipper, or drawstring.
  • Compare the volume of the case with the available space in your bag or luggage.
  • For carrying it separately, consider a loop, handle, or comfortable grip.
  • Choose between a shape-retaining and a compact foldable option.

Transport and practical details

If you carry it frequently, pay attention to how it opens and the space needed to handle it. A zipper running around most of the case can make it easier to insert the headphones, but check the cable position before closing it. Internal seams and compartment edges should not put pressure on the ear cushions or headband. Store the headphones dry and let the case air out when necessary; assess the level of protection solely according to the properties specified for the particular product.
