Ibanez GRX40-BKN — Affordable ST-Style Electric Guitar with Gig-Ready Features

The Ibanez GRX40-BKN sits at the entry point of Ibanez's GIO series, an ST-style electric guitar that brings the brand's signature playability to a budget-conscious price tier. Built around a poplar body and a bolt-on maple neck, this instrument targets first-time players, students, and anyone who needs a reliable workhorse for practice and small gigs. The Black Night gloss finish, white pickguard, and chrome hardware give it a clean, stage-ready look straight out of the box. At 648 mm scale with a 305 mm fingerboard radius, the playing feel stays familiar to anyone who has handled an ST-style guitar before.

What Sets this model Apart in the Entry-Level ST Segment

What separates it from other budget ST-style guitars is the inclusion of Ibanez's Infinity pickup system and a properly spec'd T106 tremolo bridge. HSS configuration pairs a ceramic-magnet Infinity R humbucker at the bridge with two Infinity RS single coils, giving players genuine tonal range rather than a one-trick instrument. The T106 tremolo features 6 independent saddles for precise intonation per string, plus a threaded tremolo arm for stable fit during use. A mono-unit output jack — a single solid piece rather than a stacked assembly — reduces the risk of loose connections and crackle over time.

Body and Neck Construction — Stability and Comfort

The body and neck combination forms the foundation of any electric guitar's feel and tone. Designers chose tonewoods that balance weight, stability, and cost while keeping the playing experience close to higher-tier RG models. The solid poplar body has no separate top wood, keeping weight down and cost accessible for first-time buyers.

• Body Material: Poplar — lightweight tonewood that keeps the guitar balanced on a strap.
• Maple used for the neck ensures rigidity and a bright tonal foundation that complements the ceramic pickups.
• Fretboard Material: Jatoba — reddish-brown wood with a rich midrange and crisp high end
• Scale Length: 648 mm — standard ST-style scale for familiar string tension and bending feel
• Fingerboard Radius: 305 mm — a flat, modern radius suited to both chord work and lead playing

Pickups and Electronics — HSS Flexibility Across Genres

Pickup configuration is where this instrument earns its tonal range. The HSS layout covers everything from glassy clean single-coil tones to high-output humbucker drive, making it a practical choice for players who cross genre lines.

• Pickup Configuration: HSS — humbucker at bridge, single coils at middle and neck
• Bridge Pickup: Infinity R (H) — passive ceramic humbucker for full, driven tones
• Middle and Neck Pickups: Infinity RS (S) — passive ceramic single coils for clean and mid-gain clarity
• Controls: 1 volume, 1 tone, 5-way selector — covers seven pickup combinations including the position-2 quack tone

Hardware and Factory Setup — Ready to Play Out of the Box

The hardware package is designed to keep setup simple and tuning reasonably stable for a tremolo-equipped guitar at this price point. Players receive the instrument with strings and a setup that most can fine-tune with the included tools.

• Bridge: T106 tremolo — 6 independent saddles for per-string intonation and height adjustment
• String Gauge: .009–.042 — light gauge set that balances bending ease with tuning stability
• Nut Width: 42 mm — narrow enough for fast lead playing, wide enough for comfortable chord shapes
• Hardware Color: Chrome — pairs cleanly with the white pickguard and Black Night finish

Who Should Buy this instrument

The Ibanez GRX40-BKN is the right choice for beginner and intermediate players who want a real Ibanez-built electric guitar without paying for premium-tier features they may not yet need. Students working through their first year of lessons will appreciate the lightweight poplar body and the slim GRX neck profile that doesn't strain smaller hands. Home recording enthusiasts benefit from the HSS pickup layout, which covers clean arpeggios, funk rhythm work, and heavier riffing through a single guitar. Budget-conscious gigging musicians get a dependable backup instrument with chrome hardware and a gloss finish that holds up to regular transport.
